Creating a Mesmerizing Stained Glass Window for the Church of the Hills in Evergreen, Colorado

In 2018, our team embarked on a remarkable project at the Church of the Hills in Evergreen, Colorado. This restoration aimed to blend the timeless beauty of stained glass with the church’s existing architecture, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and practical improvement.

The Challenge and Vision

One primary challenge in this new fabrication project was complementing the existing structural elements. We needed to keep the original wooden cross divisions in the window and work around the steel frames. Therefore, we meticulously carved out the original glass and designed a solution that fit seamlessly with the existing steel frames.

The goal was clear: to create a colorful stained glass cross window that added beauty to the church and addressed a practical issue. The church had been experiencing an abundance of natural light, blinding the congregation during services. Our solution involved using dark colors in the stained glass to reduce the overwhelming light, creating a more comfortable and contemplative environment.

The Artistic and Functional Solution

We carefully selected a palette of dark hues to replace the original glass around the wooden cross divisions. This dark glass served to reduce the intensity of the incoming light, creating a serene ambiance. To add a touch of artistic brilliance, we incorporated beveled glass around the cross. This choice was deliberate – the beveled glass creates rainbows and prisms, casting enchanting light patterns within the church.

The result was nothing short of mesmerizing. The congregation and visitors are captivated by the beauty of the stained glass and the unique play of light it casts. The combination of dark colors and the prismatic effects of the beveled glass not only solved the practical issue of excessive light but also enhanced the spiritual and aesthetic experience within the church.

Overcoming Challenges

One significant challenge was working with the existing structural elements. We had to ensure that the new design complemented and integrated with the original wooden cross divisions and steel frames. This required precision and creativity, carving out the original glass and constructing a design that worked harmoniously with the existing framework.

Our team’s expertise in both the artistic and structural aspects of stained glass allowed us to navigate this challenge successfully. The final result is a testament to the meticulous planning and craftsmanship that went into creating this beautiful and functional stained glass window for the Church of the Hills.

The integration of dark glass and beveled glass not only addressed the light issue but also added a dynamic visual element to the church interior. The play of rainbows and prisms created by the beveled glass enhances the spiritual atmosphere, enveloping the congregation in a serene and inspiring environment.
